Bobby Bonilla to rejoin the Mets next season

A little-known fact is that Bobby Bonilla will be showing up on the Mets payroll next year, and every year until 2035. Either Bobby Bonilla has the best agent ever, or Steve Phillips is the worst GM and baseball analyst ever.

Back in 1999, the Mets paid Bonilla $5.9 MM to play 60 games and bat a paltry .160. Looking to dump Bonilla as quickly as possible, Phillips, GM of the Mets at the time, released Bonilla, but agreed to a bizarre deal to defer payment of his guaranteed salary.

The Mets will pay Bobby Bonilla $1.2 MM in 2011 as part of his buyout from way back in 1999. And, they’ll pay him $1.2 MM each year afterwards, until 2035!!! That’s a total of $30 MM. The Mets could have just paid Bonilla the $5.9 MM owed to him for the 2000 season and avoided this whole mess.

I, for one, would love to see Bonilla attend each Mets game and show his appreciation for the fat paychecks that will be coming to him for the next 24 years.
